Tanzania Grants Visa-Free Entry to 21 African Countries, Nigeria Excluded in Tourism Push
Tanzania’s Immigration Services Department has published its official 2026 list of visa-exempt countries, granting free entry to citizens of 21 African nations as part of a strategy to boost tourism and regional economic development.
Under the policy, passport holders from the selected countries can enter the United Republic of Tanzania without applying for a visa in advance. The move is aimed at increasing intra-Africa travel, lengthening visitor stays, and supporting key sectors including hospitality, wildlife tourism, and air transport.
The 21 African countries on Tanzania’s visa-free list:
1. Angola
2. Botswana
3. Burundi
4. Democratic Republic of Congo
5. Gambia
6. Ghana
7. Kenya
8. Lesotho
9. Madagascar
10. Malawi
11. Mauritius
12. Mozambique
13. Namibia
14. Rwanda
15. Seychelles
16. South Africa
17. South Sudan
18. Swaziland
19. Uganda
20. Zambia
21. Zimbabwe
The list reflects Tanzania’s longstanding regional integration commitments, particularly within the East African Community. EAC members Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and South Sudan all appear among the exempted nations.
Nigeria is not included in the 2026 exemptions. Nigerian citizens will still be required to apply for a visa prior to travel or obtain one on arrival/e-Visa, in line with existing immigration procedures.
Officials said the visa-free arrangement applies to tourism, business, and short-stay visits. Longer stays, work permits, and residence will continue to require separate authorization. The policy takes effect immediately and will be reviewed periodically based on reciprocity agreements and tourism data.
Tanzania’s broader exemption list also covers countries in the Caribbean, Asia-Pacific, and several British Overseas Territories, but the 21 African nations make up the continent’s portion of the waiver.
