IJAWS ARE STILL LIVING IN PENURY

The plight of the Ijaw speaking people of the Niger Delta is getting worse despite producing series of past and present political leaders .
There is still high level of underdevelopment in spite of the abundant human and mineral resources.
An estimated 99% percent of villages and towns are yet to be connected to the national grid, people still drink and bath with populated water .
Majority of the riverine communities have no access road except through the rivers or streams. In a situation where there is road, it's terribly bad, muddy , not motorable.
Many villages and towns are yet to have telecommunication network or access to internet services .
Education is totally dead as the few secondary schools and glorified higher institutions are basically for external and internal examination irregularities without qualified teachers. .
The primary and nursery schools are in deplorable state .
Infrastructural projects are abandoned or uncompleted with contractors absconding with the inflated monies .
Healthcare is not also spared in the area. Almost every town and village lack good medical services even in the midst of high mortality rate.
The political class seems not bothered about the high level of underdevelopment, crime and social vices killing the youths in their numbers, rather they are just interested in misappropriating public funds for selfish gains.
Pressure groups and activists have also been politicized hence genuine protests and agitations make no impact any longer since the Kaima declaration of 1998, the Struggle for emancipation and resource control of the early 2000.
Xtrim News finds out that most of the so called pressure groups like INC and IYC are nothing but direct affiliations of the political parties especially PDP and APC.
The oil companies have also neglected their civic responsibilities to the host communities by compromising the influence of some selfish leaders and kings .
This is one core reason, unemployment is still lingering in the area amidst large numbers of brilliant graduates .
This shows, the lack of leadership and the decline in morality the Niger Delta people are subjected into .
The level of poverty and illiteracy is geometrically increasing while the few political and Monarchial class gets richer by openly stealing from the common wealth of the people.
The Ijaw people of the Niger Delta region of Nigeria are the most blessed yet living inside a disgusting curse .
Until selfless, highly civil, compassionate, competent minds take over the leadership of the area , the future seems bleak .
The poverty of the mind is reflecting on the people during elections in which same crop of mischievous fellows keep recycling themselves in various leadership positions without any tangible result or achievement.
It's important to state , building the mindset of the people to seeing leadership as service and not a help or means to amass wealth is needed.
People should be enlightened to realize that, these people who are representing them in the state and national assemblies are nothing but servants . All the wealth they flaunt is for the people and should be used as such.
People should be enlightened, constituents have right to recall non performing representatives and replace them with better ones.
People should be educated about the electoral process and the need for the choice of the masses to triumph .
This undoubtedly, a long way to achieve but with constant enlightenment programs as Comr. Tam Oburumu is doing, things may change for good.
NGOs should focus on this very important aspect of the lives of the people.
The truth is ,there is underdevelopment because of bad and incompetent leaders.
